I have been affiliated with Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. since it started in 1986. Some of those original members were 18, 19, 20 years old when I first met them and are now in their 40s. It has been a delight for me to meet these young women from different backgrounds and communities when they first came to college, joined the sorority, and then developed into strong, beautiful, talented professional women, wives, mothers. I have continued to be an advisor over the years because I believe in the positive influences that being in the sorority brings to these women. They learn to manage their time, to speak before large groups, to organize events. They also develop their communication skills. They have support and resources for doing well in their classes and for going on to graduate school or the working world. And there is a continual emphasis on giving back to the community, particularly the Latino community.
When my daughter got ready to go to college at UC Irvine, she told me she planned to join Lambda Theta Nu. Being a fair parent, I encouraged her to look at all of the groups and to be sure she wasn’t just joining the Lambdas out of loyalty to me. But she was adamant that she wanted to be a Lambda because they represented sisterhood and professionalism to her. Of course, I already knew about the sorority’s good points but I wanted my daughter to make her own decision and join for all the right reasons. I am proud that my daughter became a Lambda. The women at UC Irvine embodied the same positive values that she saw from the Chico chapter as she was growing up. All of the women in Lambda Theta Nu are like my little sisters/daughters. I hope they will find similar supportive groups as they go throughout their lives.
If your daughter mentions that she is considering Lambda Theta Nu, I encourage you to question her to make sure she is joining for all the right reasons – to help her be academically successful, to network with other professional Latinas, to have a supportive group, a second family away from home, to give back to her community. And then rest assured that your daughter will be a better person for having gone through this experience. I am proud of all “my ladies” who wear the Lambda Theta Nu letters. If your daughter becomes part of our family, and as you get to meet these women, I’m sure you will be, too!

Mi afiliación con Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. comenzó en el año 1986. Algunos de los miembros originales tenían entre 18, 19 y 20 años de edad cuando las conocí y ahora están en sus 40’s. Ha sido un verdadero placer para mí conocer a estas mujeres de diferentes orígenes y comunidades cuando llegaron por primera vez a la universidad. Ellas se unieron a la hermandad y luego se convirtieron en fuertes, hermosas, talentosas profesionales, esposas y madres. He continuado como asesora a lo largo de los años porque creo en las influencias positivas que suceden al ser parte de una hermandad. Las hermanas aprenden a manejar su tiempo y a ser más productivas, por ejemplo, aprenden a hablar ante grandes grupos y organizar eventos locales y nacionales. También desarrollan sus habilidades de comunicación, las hermanas tienen acceso a varios recursos para triunfar en sus clases y así continuar con su educación o en el mundo laboral. Esta organización tiene un énfasis continuo en retribuir a la comunidad, en especial a la comunidad Latina.
Cuando mi hija se preparaba para ir a la Universidad de California de Irvine, ella me dijo que deseaba unirse con Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc . Como madre justa, animé a mi hija a mirar a otros grupos para que estuviera segura de que no se estuviera uniendo a Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. solo por lealtad a mí. Pero, ella insistió en que quería ser una Lambda porque representaban la hermandad y el profesionalismo que ella deseaba. Por supuesto, yo ya sabía de las buenas cualidades que esta hermandad ofrecía, pero yo quería que mi hija tomara su propia decisión y que se uniera por las razones correctas. Estoy orgullosa de que mi hija se convirtiera en una Lambda. Las mujeres en la Universidad de California de Irvine inculcaban los mismos valores positivos que yo vi en el capítulo fundador de Chico. Todas las mujeres de Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. son como mis hermanitas/hijas. Espero que todas las mujeres encuentren grupos de apoyo similares a medida que avancen a lo largo de sus vidas.
