Cutting through to enhance educational opportunities for Latinos.
Literacy Grams

Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. proudly announces that its undergraduate chapters and alumnae members have raised $36,566.97 over the last three years as part of its national philanthropy known as “Tijeras: Cutting Through to Enhance Educational Opportunities for Latinos.”

The distribution of Literacy Gram Contributions, a component of the organization’s national philanthropy, aims to financially support organizations that provide educational opportunities to Latino communities by promoting literacy and/or access to higher education through educational programming. Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. honors the legacy of our founding mothers by taking a proactive approach in “opening doors of opportunity for Latinos in our community” through fundraising money and distributing these financial resources on an annual basis to organizations working in underserved communities to enhance educational opportunities for Latinos.

The three recipients of our 2022-2023 Tijeras Literacy Gram Contributions are: Al Exito! in Iowa, Chicanos Por La Causa in Arizona and Lincoln Literacy in Nebraska. Each organization received $12,188.99 respectively for their programming geared towards literacy efforts in their communities. To date, Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc.  has donated $269,684.84 since the inception of the Tijeras National philanthropy in 2002. Scholarships

Through the years, Lambda Theta Nu has remained committed to helping Latina women achieve their academic goals by providing them with financial assistance. Our chapter’s proactive fundraising efforts allowed for us to award $40,000 in scholarships to ten Latina women in pursuit of higher education during the 2020-2021 academic school year. Each recipient received a scholarship in the amount of $4,000 to help reduce the financial burden students experience while pursuing their education while simultaneously aiming to assist with retention efforts in institutions of higher education. Our next scholarship application window will open in the Spring of 2025.

$40,000 Goal for 2025
Latina Youth Leadership Conference

As an organization, we have a personal obligation to help improve the graduation statistics of Latina women by empowering girls to achieve success from a young age. Each year, each chapter plans, coordinates and implements a Latina Youth Leadership Conference (LYLC) in their community designed to create a fun and safe environment in which middle and/or high school girls can take college preparedness workshops and engage in discussions about academic barriers affecting Latina women. Our overall objective is to encourage young girls to establish academic goals early on, allow our members to be a testament to academic success in higher education, and help young students navigate the intricacies of entering college. Through their outstanding LYLC efforts, Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. chapters outreached 1179 middle and high school students for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Our Other Tijeras Service Programs

Mentorship Program

A program in which our members provide high school students with assistance in resource acquisition, goal setting and exploration of academic and professional options.

Literacy Week

Our members across the United States create awareness on the issue of Latinx Literacy by hosting events at their university campuses. Chapters host book drives, Latinx literacy panels, promote reading to children, and host fundraisers to promote higher education in the Latinx community. All proceeds collected from the literacy week are donated to a non-profit whose mission is to promote and foster literacy skills within the Latinx community.

Youth Support Circle

Our active chapters partner with local high schools to provide an environment of support for open discussion and guidance on issues affecting the futures, academics and social lives of young Latinx high school students.
